U.S. Virgin Islands

Facts and Figures

In the past five years, the National Endowment for the Arts distributed $2,858,027 in federal funding, either directly or through territory and regional partners, in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In information gathered by the Arts Endowment from 2017 County Business Patterns, produced by the U.S. Census Bureau, and World Development Indicators, produced by the World Bank, the U.S. Virgin Islands…

• Employed 148 workers in the arts and cultural industries, with workers earning wages and benefits totaling more than $3.6 million

In addition to offering direct grants, the NEA supports national initiatives benefiting people across the country. Over the last five years:

The Blue Star Museums program provided free admission to thousands of active military personnel and their families at 4 participating museums in Virgin Islands.

More than 629 students from 38 high schools in Virgin Islands participated in Poetry Out Loud.

2022
Beyond just performing, 2022 National Heritage Fellow Stanley Jacobs and his band expanded its mission in recent decades, becoming a nonprofit educational organization teaching the young people of St. Croix their quelbe tradition.

Sylvester McIntosh
1987
1987 National Heritage Fellow Sylvester McIntosh played traditional Crucian music with the Roadmasters, performing regularly at quadrille dances, weddings, festivals, private parties, and nightclubs.
