National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu Visits Portland, Oregon, January 18- 21, 2016

Washington, DC—Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), will travel to Portland, Oregon from January 18, 2016 through January 21, 2016. During her visit, Chu will visit various art organizations contributing to Portland’s diverse arts culture and join Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) to tour two nationally recognized schools incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) in their curriculums; Highland Park Middle School and Quatama Elementary. Chairman Chu and Congresswoman Bonamici will also participate in a grants workshop with members of the local arts community.
On Tuesday, January 19th, Chairman Chu begins her visit to Portland with a tour of the Portland Art Museum. Following that tour, she will visit the Miracle Theatre Group, Milagro, where she will learn about the Miracle Theatre Group’s unique cultural platform. Next, Chairman Chu will visit Wisdom of the Elders, an organization dedicated to recording and preserving the traditional cultural values of indigenous elders for future generations.
On Wednesday, January 20th, Chairman Chu and Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) will tour Highland Park Middle School and Quatama Elementary. Last November, both schools received an “innOVATION STEAM Grant Award,” from the Ovation Foundation, the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), and Americans for the Arts (AFTA).
Next, Chairman Chu and Congresswoman Bonamici will tour the Bag and Baggage Theater Company where they will gain a broader understanding about the significant impact the Bag and Baggage Theater Company has in Portland. Following that tour, they both will participate in a grants workshop at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. The workshop is designed to give art leaders, organizations, and art community stakeholders the tools they need to understand the NEA grant application process.
As part of the National Endowment for the Arts’ 50th anniversary, the NEA is creating a story bank of multimedia content that showcases the impact of the arts. To date, hundreds of people from across the country, including Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, have submitted stories about how the arts and the National Endowment for the Arts have impacted their lives.
