Annie Ross: As a kid I was raised really backstage. And every noise, every light was really to be taken notice of.
NEA JAZZ MASTER ANNIE ROSS HAD A VERY UNUSUAL CHILDHOOD. SHE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES FROM SCOTLAND AT AGE 4 AND WAS RAISED IN HOLLYWOOD BY AN AUNT -- A NOTED MUSICAL ACTRESS NAMED ELLA LOGAN.
My aunt was a great party giver. So she would have huge parties, everybody would sing and play. And I got to know musicians. I met Duke when I was about 13 and Roy Eldridge. So when the guys would come over to see my aunt. They were amazed that I would know as much as I did.
MUSIC: up and fades
THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH VOCALIST ANNIE ROSS WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
