In 1973, NEA Jazz Master Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" became one of the best selling albums in jazz history -- and one of only a handful to sell more than a million copies. "Headhunters" created shockwaves within the jazz community -- and its ripples reached many listeners beyond it, like my big brother, saxophonist Branford Marsalis.

Branford Marsalis: Herbie's playin so much piano on that, if you were just like a traditional (which I was) R&B person, you were not prepared for the stuff that Herbie was puttin down. Like you got the little funky part that everyone knows (sings) but then there's this other part of the song when the bass starts goin (sings). And then it gets serious, it gets serious. And Herbie's playin some bad, bad stuff.
