Charlie Haden:  It really bothered me being raised in a racist environment.  Because I hate living in a place where there is not equality – you know where somebody is exploited.  And I saw a lot of that in the Ozarks where I was raised. IN 1969, NEA JAZZ MASTER CHARLIE HADEN FORMED AN EXPERIMENTAL BIG BAND CALLED THE LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA.  IT BECAME A POWERFUL VEHICLE FOR MUSIC BORN FROM HADEN’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL BELIEFS…

Charlie Haden:  Because I felt strongly about the injustice in world, coming from the United States too, which wasn’t just with racism, but with exploiting people and going into war for corporations to make money to fuel war, and it just keeps going round and round.  And so that’s been a part of my music ever since I can remember is to try to let people know how I feel about the injustice in the world.
