Jimmy Heath on Orrin Keepnews as cult figure

NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT...

MUSIC: More Than You Know (Jimmy Heath ? Swamp Seed)

Jimmy Heath:  I think Orrin Keepnews is one of the people that are very important in this music because he would let the artist have artistic freedom.

SAXOPHONIST JIMMY HEATH HAS APPEARED ON HUNDREDS OF RECORDINGS, WHICH MAKES HIM A PRETTY GOOD JUDGE OF A SESSION, DON?T YOU THINK?  THIS IS HIS 1963 ALBUM SWAMP SEED, RECORDED FOR RIVERSIDE RECORDS, WITH NEA JAZZ MASTER ORRIN KEEPNEWS AT THE HELM.

MUSIC: up for punctuation

Jimmy Heath: I?ve been with other companies and they demand certain things, ?Well, we gotta sell this, we gotta do this, we gotta...? and tell you how to play and what to play.  Orrin Keepnews would allow you to bring your own material.  If he hired you, he had enough faith in you, that he would let you do your thing. I think what Orrin did for jazz will go down in history.  He?s a cult figure, as far as jazz music is concerned.

MUSIC: fades under and out

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH JIMMY HEATH ON PRODUCER ORRIN KEEPNEWS WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.  I?M CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE.
