Joe Segal on Big Bands in His Youth

BIG BANDS ON THE RADIO [:59]

RUFFIN: Now, a Jazz Moment

Radio static, fades into big band

SEGAL: I used to sneak into the front room after my mother went to bed, about ten o'clock, and put the volume on very low, and listened to the remotes. Big bands, broadcast on radio every night.

Fades up

RUFFIN: 2015 NEA JAZZ MASTER JOE SEGAL ON THE MUSIC THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE.

O Sole Mio

SEGAL: From WWL in New Orleans, the Claude Thornhill Band, or from WOR in New York, they did the Metropolitan Opera, and then they switched over to Town Hall with Eddie Condon. And I heard all the greats: Jack Teagarden and Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong and all ‘a that. I loved all of it.

O Sole Mio
