Kenny Barron on improvisation

NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT...

MUSIC:

Melancholia
CD: Wanton Spirit
1994 Universal Music Jazz France

Kenny Barron: One of the linchpins of jazz is improvisation. So it's like instant composition -- creating problems for yourself while you're playing and having to solve them while you're playing.

NEA JAZZ MASTER KENNY BARRON...

It amazes me just to be able to grab a handful of notes out of thin air and make something out of it.

MUSIC:up for a phrase

For me, improvising is just... I love it. Being able to tell a story, you know, to project an emotion, to be able to reach out to somebody ? and I think that's the most important thing ? is to be able to reach out and touch somebody. If you can do that, then I think you've accomplished something.

MUSIC: up and fades

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH PIANIST KENNY BARRON WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
