NEA JAZZ MASTER KENNY BARRON RECALLS ONE OF HIS FIRST BIG BREAKS IN JAZZ. IT WAS 1959 WHEN SAXOPHONIST YUSEF LATEEF CAME TO PHILADELPHIA, WHERE BARRON WAS AN ASPIRING YOUNG PIANIST.
Kenny Barron: I was still in high school and he came through Philadelphia. And his pianist missed the flight. So I went and played the matinee. And from that, he asked me to write some music for a recording. The recording was called The Centaur and the Phoenix. So I wrote a couple arrangements for that. I was a beginner, but at the time I had fairly good ears. So, for me, it was a great experience. And I learned a lot for doing that.
MUSIC: up and fades
THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH PIANIST KENNY BARRON WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
