Lewis Porter on Liebman's "non-Coltranesque" style

NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT...

MUSIC: My Favorite Things

Lewis Porter:  So many people?especially saxophone players?were inspired by John Coltrane. But Dave is a person that has a very individual voice,  He has a style that's really different from Coltrane, even though he's so inspired by him.

JOHN COLTRANE BIOGRAPHER LEWIS PORTER ON NEA JAZZ MASTER DAVE LIEBMAN...

He has all these kind of I call them snakey runs?you know, musicians would say very chromatic runs?that are very distinctive, they're really his own thing. And, but he plays with that power and intensity that you would expect of someone who really understands what Coltrane is about.  Another thing about Dave Liebman as a musician is his technical excellence. He has a fantastic sound, he has a great sound, very focused, has a lot of resonance and that's something that he teaches to other saxophonists.

MUSIC: up for punctuation, then fades under and out
