RUFFIN: NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT

Misterioso under

NEA JAZZ MASTER LORRAINE GORDON WRITES IN HER MEMOIR, ALIVE AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD: "MONK WAS A REVELATION. FROM OUR VERY FIRST ENCOUNTER, HE WAS RIGHT IN MY GROOVE."

GORDON: To this day I will never forget it as a cornerstone in my life, meeting Monk, and going to his house and watching him play, and sitting there for the first time, hearing, the first time I ever heard such music.

Misterioso up and hot

GORDON: It was so different than anything that I had been listening to or knew about, and I immediately fell in love with it. You know, I didn't feel,  "Ouf, this is strange, or different, or he's odd…" I just went 100% for Thelonious and his music.

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH JAZZ ADVOCATE LORRAINE GORDON WAS PRODUCED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
