Pat Metheny on Bright Size Life

BRIGHT SIZE LIFE – [:89] KEN MARTIN - NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT Bright Size Life under PAT METHENY WAS ALL OF 19 WHEN HE WAS OFFERED A CHANCE TO RECORD HIS DEBUT ALBUM. BUT FELLOW JAZZ MASTER AND METHENY’S MENTOR, GARY BURTON, INTERVENED. PAT METHENY.

Pat Metheny: Gary being Gary said, “You’re not ready to do a record. You know, you might only get to do one record in your whole life, so you better make sure that it’s THE record.”

SO HE WAITED A YEAR AND A HALF. IN 1976, HE RELEASED BRIGHT SIZE LIFE ON ECM RECORDS.

Metheny: It seemed like 20 years at the time––to really write that bunch of tunes that became the tunes on Bright Size Life that are arguments that I still feel are valid arguments, and I do have to really give Gary a lot of credit for that.

KEN MARTIN: THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH GUITARIST PAT METHENY WAS PRODUCED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
