KEN MARTIN - NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT
Bright Size Life under
PAT METHENY WAS ALL OF 19 WHEN HE WAS OFFERED A CHANCE TO RECORD HIS DEBUT ALBUM. BUT FELLOW JAZZ MASTER AND METHENY’S MENTOR, GARY BURTON, INTERVENED. PAT METHENY.
“Bright Size Life” composed and performed by Pat Metheny, from the album, Bright Size Life, used courtesy of ECM and by permission of Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing a/c Pat Meth Music Corp, BMI.
Pat Metheny: Gary being Gary said, “You’re not ready to do a record. You know, you might only get to do one record in your whole life, so you better make sure that it’s THE record.”
SO HE WAITED A YEAR AND A HALF. IN 1976, HE RELEASED BRIGHT SIZE LIFE ON ECM RECORDS.
Metheny: It seemed like 20 years at the time––to really write that bunch of tunes that became the tunes on Bright Size Life that are arguments that I still feel are valid arguments, and I do have to really give Gary a lot of credit for that.
KEN MARTIN: THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH GUITARIST PAT METHENY WAS PRODUCED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
