When Ornette came, it was just inspiring. It was just like wow, Ornette’s here to check us out. And he came two or three nights in a row to hear us when we were playing at the Vanguard, and we’d have these great raps afterwards, as only you could have with Ornette. And Charlie, actually, was like, “We’ve got to do a record, man, all of us, you know?” And Ornette was like, “Yeah, let’s do it.” And we did … Song X.
