Phil Woods, Jazz Warrior
Now, A Jazz Moment...
MUSIC: "All Bird's Children" CD: Into the Woods, Concord Jazz CCD-4699 (cut 1)
A common denominator in great jazz artists is that they never lose their curiosity -- the desire to explore, to learn more... 2007 NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods is tireless in this pursuit.
Phil Woods: Sixty years I've been at it, you know? And the more I do it the more I don't know shit about music (laughs) you know? Really! The work is never done. And that's the beauty of being an artist, you know? I mean, I know who I am. I have no illusions about being a genius musician. I pride myself on being a soldier. A warrior for jazz. I mean I trained a lot of young people. And I've learned my lessons well and I'd like to keep the flame burning.
MUSIC: up and fades
This Jazz Moment with saxophonist and clarinetist Phil Woods was created by the National Endowment for the Arts.
