Quincy Jones being part of the jazz family

Now, A Jazz Moment...

MUSIC: "For Lena and Lennie," CD: Quincy Jones's Finest Hour, Verve 069 490 667-2 (cut 9)

Quincy Jones: There's an old expression that most American jazz musicians shack up with music first, and then they court it and marry it later. That's exactly what happened.

NEA Jazz Master Quincy Jones.

Quincy Jones: I started to listen to these big bands come through in the Navy -- Clark Terry, and Basie, and Woody Herman, Charlie Barnet and all these things -- and I said, "That's where I want to live the rest of my life. That's the family I want to be with," you know. They were well educated, fun, worldly. And I said, "This is the family I want to be in," and I was.

MUSIC: up and fades

This jazz moment with trumpeter, bandleader, composer, arranger, and producer Quincy Jones was created by the National Endowment for the Arts.
