MUSIC: "The Very Thought of You," CD: You're My Thrill, Verve 314-549-417-2

NEA Jazz Master Shirley Horn started playing the piano when she was four. For most of her childhood, that's all she did.

Shirley Horn: It was all about music, going to school I was in school all the time. I wanted to do that. Good lord, my mother used to say, why don't you go and play with the kids outside?

Her passion for her instrument never waned and horn's musicianship evolved. She became a Grammy award-winning vocalist and renowned composer. Her long and successful career ended when she passed away in 2005. But, Horn's inimitable style and sound will continue to be her everlasting legacy.

This Jazz Moment With Shirley Horn was created by the National Endowment for the Arts.
