NEA Jazz Masters Shirley Horn and Carmen McRae were close friends but they only made one recording together: I Will Say Goodbye.

A few years later, McRae paid horn a visit.

Shirley Horn: And she came one night and she stayed for the whole 2 shows, I was surprised, she wasn't felling well and so after that we went up to my suite and it was almost like she was telling me she wasn't gonna be here long and she was telling me why I should carry on the torch.

McRae died in 1994. Horn continued to perform until her death eleven years later. Many of her recordings received Grammy nominations and two won awards. She will always be remembered as one of the greatest balladiers in jazz.
