Gary Bartz: I was six when I started begging for a saxophone. Every time, Christmas, birthdays, whatever, "What would you like?" "Saxophone." Took five years. Finally, when I was 11, they got me one for Christmas, and that was when I started. But it's funny, because I had been listening that long, that when I got the horn, I already knew how to play it. I mean, I knew how to play what I heard. I just had to learn how to play the saxophone. That's why I tell my students now, listening is more important than playing. And I always say it twice, listening is more important than playing.
