"Every day I learn from the young people. I learned from that changing community we serve. And every day is a new day and a new opportunity and I think that's the joy of it. I think we need joy in our work. We have to go forth with joy and that's really what's behind, I think, a lot of creativity or what gets people to be creative is the joy of creating."

Rebecca Medrano is the co-founder and executive director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, which has promoted and shared Hispanic/Latinx arts and culture with the DC community for more than 45 years. In this video spotlight from the new issue of American Artscape Medrano talks about the importance of the theater to the DC community, the difficulties of running a culturally specific organization, and why it’s culturally necessary to produce plays in Spanish.
