Vacation Poems

Guiomar Ochoa

The idea of summer often brings to mind thoughts of vacation—whether it's a long-awaited escape to the beach, a spontaneous road trip, or the simple joy of unstructured days. For me, it's the thrill of mapping out a getaway and the freedom to wander. Whatever travel memories or restful moments summer evokes for you, we hope you’ll find something familiar in the vacation-inspired poems featured below.

Black camera with poem written in black

He showed his vacation to his camera, which pictured it, preserving it forever//the river, the trees,
the sky, the light, the bow of his rushing boat
behind which he stood with his camera
preserving his vacation even as he was having it
so that after he had had it he would still
have it.
“The Vacation” by Wendell Berry

Long winding highway with poem written in black

Now the dark waters at the bow
fold back, like earth against the plow;
