Making an Impact

Wegman's World

William Wegman might be best-known as the guy who takes pictures of his Weimaraners dressed in costumes or modeling unusual poses. But there’s a deep sense of artistic purpose and more than a touch of the surreal that make Wegman's photographs much more than sight gags. Moving fluently among drawing, painting, photography, and video, a recipient of two NEA fellowships (one in 1975 for video, the second in 1982 for photography) Wegman is a conceptual postmodernist artist who happens to have a very active funny bone. He has an eye for the absurd, the imagination to actualize it, and the sensibility to make it accessible. I visited him (and his three dogs) in his New York City loft to get a sense of what constitutes Wegman’s world.
