Cleveland: At the Crossroads of Healing and the Arts

Earlier this year, the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture—or CPAC—released a white paper that examined the impact of the arts on healing in Cleveland, Ohio. Creative Minds in Medicine: A Cleveland Creative Intersection presented six case studies of programs that embrace the arts in their healing practices, and demonstrate the ameliorative power of the arts for patients, their families, medical practitioners. The case studies examined in Creative Minds in Medicine cast a wide net: from training medical students in the advantages of art therapy; to the sense of comfort created through architectural design at the Hospice of the Western Reserve; to the Arts and Medicine Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, whose arts programming and commitment to whole patient care stands at the forefront of work taking place at the intersection of art and medicine, not just in Cleveland but throughout the world.

CPAC Director Tom Schorgl, and Maria Jukic, executive director of Cleveland Clinic’s Arts and Medicine Institute, sat down to discuss the various ways the lively Cleveland arts community has joined forces with medical innovators, and with Cleveland Clinic’s extraordinary arts and healing programming.

(A note about the music: The flute and guitar improvisation was recorded recently at the Cleveland Clinic when Robert Gruca (guitar) and Linda White (flute) performed. Thanks to Gregory Bonanno of the Cleveland Clinic for recording. The other guitar piece is "I Won't Go to Bed," composed and performed by Adhitia Sofyan.)
