Simply put, Antonio Sanchez is a musician's musician. He has played alongside some of the greatest musicians in modern jazz, including Danilo Perez, Chick Corea, and Paquito D'Rivera, and has been an integral part of every project Pat Metheny has undertaken in the past 13 years. Of course, that Sanchez is a sought-after artist should come as no surprise: his drumming is dynamic and lightening quick with a range that is unsurpassed. At the same time, he is probably the most melodic drummer working today, reveling in moments of quiet detail. Sanchez studied piano and composition at the National Conservatory in Mexico before moving to Boston where he studied jazz at the Berklee College of Music. Although continually in demand, Sanchez branched out five years ago and began to record his own compositions as a bandleader. His recently released album New Life has been garnering glowing reviews, especially for its title track, a 14-minute exploration of drums, horns, piano, and voice.
